During my tenure at XYZ company, I encountered a situation where a candidate's background check revealed a criminal record. The case was complicated as the record was for a non-violent offense and the candidate had served their sentence over a decade ago.
Steps Taken:
To mitigate any risks and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations, I conducted a thorough review of the case. Firstly, I checked with our legal department to ascertain if we were legally allowed to deny employment based on a non-violent crime committed over a decade ago. Upon confirmation, I communicated the findings to the hiring manager and provided guidance on how to proceed.
